The Tushy Book by Fran Manushkin

I read this book to a group of children ages 2 ½ – 6 years old and everyone was drawn in by the fun, rhyming language and the beautifully illustrated pictures. The children wanted it to be read to them again and again, and would join in, reading the words they remembered. The younger kids joined in every time that “tushy” was said and the older children remembered and recited several of their favourite lines. Even the teachers were entertained, most notably by lines such as “Every tushy’s in the back. Every tushy has a crack! Where would you put underwear if your tushy wasn’t there?”

The illustrations are brightly coloured and filled with action, there are many things happening on every page. I also really liked the diversity shown in this book, from young to old, big to little and light skinned to dark; everyone can find someone to identify with in this book.
