Snow Day Books for Kids

I received a very exciting call today at 7 am- “Don’t come in, we’re closed”. Woo hoo, snow day! I’ll be staying inside with a book today instead of going outside to brave the weather. If you need a good book to share with your kids check out my favourite snow day books for children.

Thomas' Snowsuit

Thomas’ Snowsuit– This is a classic by Robert Munsch. A hilarious story of a boy who does not want to put on his new snowsuit. This is a wonderful book to read aloud.

Snowmen at Night

Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner- What do snowmen do while we’re sleeping? This funny kids book answers that question with

First Snow in the WoodsFirst Snow in the Woods by Carl R. Sams and Jean Stoick- I love the gorgeous photographs in this book. This book shows the woodland creatures as they get ready for the coming snow.

SnowSnow by Uri Shulevitz- A snow storm is coming! No one seems to listen to the little boy in this story but he knows the truth. I love this book for the charming story and beautiful illustrations. I think this book will become a classic.

The Snowy DayThe Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats- No list of snowy books would be complete without this lovely story. A classic children’s picture book with wonderful illustrations made with collage. I really like that this book is based in a city, as so many books about snow or winter show idyllic country settings. This is a book that city kids can identify with and will appreciate.

The MittenThe Mitten by Jan Brett- The way that the illustrations are so perfectly tied to the story make this book a really engaging read. The writing is simple but sweet and I love that there is so much to see in the main picture on each page as well as the illustrations on the edges.
